THE CADDOS, THE WICHITAS, AND THE UNITED STATES, 1846 – 1901.
E. Todd. Smith

College State: Texas A&M University Press, 1996. xvii, 190pp. Index. Bibliography. Notes. Maps. Tables. First edition. As new in the original shrink wrap. The author picks up the story of these two tribes in 1846 when Texas joined the Union and turned their Indian issues over to the U. S. government. He traces the numerous relocations from the Brazos Reserve in Texas to their final reservation in western Indian Territory. Smith documents life and agricultural work on the reservation, chronicles federal attempts to introduce an education system to the Indians, and traces the effects of hostile tribes and unscrupulous whites on the reservation  experiment. The author skillfully combines primary and secondary sources to create a well-researched, readable account of Caddo and Wichita reservation experience.
